Fifteen years ago, Ferry Corsten and Tiesto joined forces to produce a series of tracks that would become the backbone of the trance revolution. In the late 1990s, the trance genre was still mostly underground and unknown to the mainstream. Artists like Paul Oakenfold and Paul Van Dyk had broken through popularity limitations with film soundtrack features and pop-electronica blends. Gouryella changed the narrative, giving trance a voice of its own, and in 2017, Ferry Corsten will release a documentary which reflects back on this pivotal moment in the electronic music generation. It started with Gouryella’s self-titled track, released in 1999.
“IT DEFINED THE APEX OF A CERTAIN KIND OF TRANCE”
-ABOVE & BEYOND
“IT WAS NEW, IT WAS FRESH, IT WAS DIFFERENT”
Whether or not you’ve ever heard of Gouryella, or even if you listen to trance, it’s a safe bet that the classical productions of Ferry Corsten and Tiesto have likely influenced whatever music you’ve been listening to recently. These tracks focused on a big-synth melody and supersaw sound that are the cornerstones of electronic music around the world. With artists like Martin Garrix and Hardwell, European Hardstyle, and traditional trance acts like Above & Beyond and Cosmic Gate, the Gouryella-sound has been passed on through a generation.
